Kolkata, 15 August: THE police on Saturday arrested the son of Bally municipal engineer Pranab Adhikari from whose house unaccounted cash worth over Rs 20 crore was seized during a raid on Friday. Pranab Adhikari (48), a sub-assistance engineer was arrested yesterday itself.
His son, Tanmay Adhikari, an engineering student, was arrested today as the police believe him to be a party to the corrupt practises of his father.
Interrogation of the father-son duo is on to know whether the seized cash was collected through bribe alone by Adhikari or the money was stashed in his house by other municipal officials and political leaders. The police are also questioning his wife to ascertain her role.
Cash worth over Rs 20 crore and a huge cache of gold jewellery were found from Adhikari’s house at Malipanchghara in Howrah during a raid by the anti-corruption wing of the Bengal police. The bundles of money were hidden in bathroom, behind the walls and under the floor tiles. The seized money is in the denominations of Rs 1,000, Rs 500 and Rs 100.
Adhikari is employed at the Bally Municipality for the past 22 years and has been in-charge of clearing building plans since 1995. He was at home when plain cloth officials from the anti-corruption wing raided his house on Friday afternoon; soon after this he ran through the back door of the house but police managed to nab him later.
Police were astonished at the recovery of the huge sum from his house as Adhikari’s monthly pay is only around Rs 45, 000. Sources said that police got the tip off from a promoter to whom he had demanded Rs 25 lakh bribe to clear a building plan.
During the over-night interrogation, Adhikari is reported to have hinted at the involvement of some senior municipal officials and political leaders in the bribe-racket.
