Kolkata, 31 December: CLOSE on the heels of Indian Railways recently writing to the state government asking to take charge of all stalled suburban rail projects in Bengal, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has now assured to become proactive vis-à-vis on-going Metro route expansion works in the city.

In a meeting held on Friday with senior officials of the Metro Railway, Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee assured all necessary help to remove the hurdles that are delaying the East-West Metro Corridor and other Metro expansion projects such as New Garia – Airport, and Joka – BBD Bag, etc.

All these projects are facing issues like encroachment on proposed alignments, non-removal of KMC water pipes and other utilities, and lack of clearance from traffic police for Metro works along the city streets.

The meeting held at Metro Rail Bhavan was attended by Metro general manager MC Chauhan, KMC commissioner Khalil Ahmed, additional commissioner of Kolkata Police Vineet Goyal and other senior officers of Metro Railway, and state transport department.
