Behrampore: A team of officials from the agriculture department had to flee for life after the farmers at Bagdanga village in Murshidabad district chased them during an official drive.
Bagdanga is located under Domkal police station jurisdiction where two SFI activists were injured in a grenade attack on 25 January allegedly carried out by Trinamool cadres. [READ: SFI activists injured in Trinamool grenade attack on public meeting]
The district agriculture department officials had gone to the village today to destroy wheat crop to contain the spread of wheat blast. The department had earlier imposed a ban on the cultivation of wheat in the district for two years as part of a drive to eradicate wheat blast attack on the crop.
Farmers were given pulse seeds free of cost as an alternative crop. Despite this, a section of farmers in Murshidabad has grown wheat this season as well and thus, the agriculture department team was out on a drive to destroy the cultivation.
But as soon as the team reached Bagdanga village today, farmers equipped with lathis got into an argument with them saying that they will not allow the crop to be destroyed. The situation eventually escalated and the farmers rushed to attack the team by yielding lathis.
Finding no other way, the agriculture officials fled the village to evade an imminent assault. The car on which the team had gone to the village was, however, damaged by the agitated farmers.
In view of the incident, the district agriculture department has suspended the drive for now until a fresh directive from the state headquarters.
