Kolkata, 01 August: LIEUTENANT General Abhay Krishna took over as the new commander of the Eastern Command headquartered in Kolkata succeeding Lt Gen Praveen Bakshi.
Lt Gen Krishna is a recipient of Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and the Vishisht Seva Medal.
A graduate from the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy, he was commissioned into the Rajputana Rifles on 7 June 1980. He is also an alumnus of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, Army War College (Higher Command Course) at Mhow (Madhya Pradesh) and the National Defence College in New Delhi.
During his 37 years of distinguished career, he has gained varied experience of commanding a Rashtriya Rifles battalion in counter insurgency operations in Manipur and in Kupwara in Kashmir during the Kargil conflict.
Lt Gen Krishna has also commanded an infantry battalion in high altitude area. He spearheaded a brigade in a mechanised environment as part of strike formation in deserts and commanded the Striking Lion division in Sikkim and later Spear Corps in the northeast.
Lt Gen Krishna has been an ambassador of Indian Army to various United Nations missions. He has been a military observer in the United Nation Peace Keeping Force in Mozambique (UNUMOZ) and Rwanda (UNAMIR). He also has the distinction of donning the appointment of Chief of Staff of United Nation Force at Burundi (ONUB).
