Kolkata, 07 September: LEADING Bengali newspaper Bartaman’s New Delhi bureau chief Atanu Bhattacharya passed away in a Delhi hospital on Monday. He was suffering from urinary cancer since 2014.
Bartaman’s news editor Himanshu Sinha said that after the detection of cancer, Bhattacharya (48) had undergone surgeries twice at Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
But his condition began to deteriorate since June this year and this had forced him to stop coming to office. Yet, honouring his seniority Bartaman retained him as the Delhi bureau chief till his last.
Survived by wife and a daughter, Bhattacharya’s last remains will be cremated in New Delhi tomorrow.
Born in 1967 at Satragachi in Howrah, Bhattacharya was the nephew of freedom fighter Kanailal Bhattacharya.
Journalists in Kolkata are saddened by his demise and many recalled him as “hardworking,” “warm” and “a person who always readily helped his colleagues and junior scribes.”
In a tweet, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has offered her condolences to his bereaved family and colleagues. “Saddened at (the) passing (away) of Atanu Bhattacharya, a much-loved journalist from Bengal. I knew him personally. Feeling bad. Sad news for all of us,” the tweet reads.
