Barasat, 18 August: MADHUSUDAN Ghose, Congress MLA from Noapara in North 24-Parganas, is no more.
Ghose, known for Spartan living and simplicity, passed away today morning at the Tata Medical Centre at Rajarhat New Town. The 80-year-old politician was admitted there for the treatment of liver cancer.
A whole-time politician, Ghose was unmarried, and is survived by a brother who was dependent on him. Before becoming MLA, Ghose was the chairman of Garulia Municipality at Noapara for nearly five decades.
Despite this, the affidavit that he had filed with his nomination papers for the 2016 Assembly elections mentioned that he had only Rs 4,000, a feature mobile phone, a bi-cycle, and lived in his ancestral house.
Ever after becoming an MLA last year by defeating a candidate of the ruling party Trinamool, Ghose used to move around his constituency in bi-cycle. To attend the Assembly session, he used to commute to Kolkata by bus.
With his death, now two Assembly constituencies in the state have fallen vacant. The other constituency is Sabang in West Midnapore that fell vacant after Manas Bhuniya was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Trinamool. By-elections to Noapara and Sabang are likely after Deepavali in mid-October.
