Bolpur: AN estranged young couple is lodging in a hotel room together with all expenses being paid for by the judge of a court in Bengal!
The district judge of Birbhum, Partha Sarathi Sen, has shown the out-of-the-box gesture to save the marriage of a young couple who married only in March last year.
Ahana Das of Tehatta in Nadia and Gautam Das of Suri in Birbhum had married with the consent of their family. But within a few months of marriage, a discord cropped up between the two and finally, they started staying separately since 20 October last year.
Earlier this month, Ahana filed a case against her husband and in-laws accusing them of domestic violence. The accused took anticipatory bail and the case come up for hearing in the Suri District Court on Tuesday (16 January).
In the court, both the estranged husband-wife accused each other of non-cooperation and physical abuse. Hearing this and considering that the couple was in their early youth, district judge Sen asked them to give the marriage a second chance by spending a few days in a hotel away from their families.
Husband Gautam responded to this by pleading that he does not have enough money to bear the expenses of staying in a hotel. This made the judge direct that the couple should stay in a hotel together for three days and he will personally bear all the expenses.
The judge also directed the inspector-in-charge of Suri police station to ensure that his order is complied with. This has now ended up the estranged couple in the same hotel room after being separated for nearly three months.
Both of them have appreciated the gesture of the judge but said that it will take them some time to bury the hostilities.
Public prosecutor Ranjit Ganguly today said that the move appears to be working. The next hearing of the case will be on 19 January when the couple will get a chance to say whether they want the marriage to continue or not.
