Silchar, 22 September: A Lok Sabha MP from Silchar in Bengali dominated Barak Valley has taken over as the new president of the All India Mahila Congress, the women wing of the opposition Congress party.
Sushmita Dev, 44, was nominated to the post by Congress president Sonia Gandhi on 9 September by replacing Shobha Oza. Dev assumed office today in presence of Oza and several other women Congress leaders.
Soon after taking charge, she Youth Congress president Raja Brar and others on cycled to the All India Congress Committee headquarters as a mark of protest against the ever escalating fuel price.
A spinster, Dev is a first time MP from Silchar and has been a MLA and municipality chairman from town in the past. She is the youngest daughter of former Union minister Santosh Mohan Dev, who passed away in Silchar on 2 August.
The first-time MP has been vocal in the Parliament on national issues and this allowed her an entry in Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s core group. She is the first leader from Assam to become All India Mahila Congress president.
