Diamond Harbour, 14 July: ONE person has died and three have sustained critical injuries following a blast at a firecracker unit at Champahati in South 24-Parganas.
The blast took place early this afternoon, when workers were engaged in making firecrackers in a single-room factory at Champahati’s Kanchanmath area made of bamboo and asbestos.
The blast was so intense that it blew away the roof of the factory and the bamboo walls soon caught fire. Some containers filled with raw materials were blown away to a pond located about 100 metres from the factory premises.
At the time of the blast, its owner Pradip Mondal, younger brother Ashok Mondal, and two staff were working at the factory. Ashok died on the spot; Pradip and the two workers were rescued by local people in a grievously injured state.
On being informed, a team from Baruipur police station and fire brigade subsequently arrived and doused the fire at the factory. By then, it had been almost reduced into ashes. Police rushed the three injured to Baruipur Sub-divisional Hospital. The condition on Pradip is unstable.
