Kolkata, 12 September: A large number of Kolkatans has joined in a call to boycott Park Street’s popular restro-bar Mocambo after it denied entry to woman because she had taken along a driver who was not “properly dressed” to dine at the “fine restaurant.”
The incident took place on 09 September (Friday) evening and the woman, Dilashi Hemnani, wrote about Mocambo’s treatment in a Facebook post the next day.
The post has by Monday night seen over 23,000 shares and nearly 5,000 comments with most people pledging not to visit Mocambo ever again and calling upon others to boycott it as well. A sizeable chunk of them is from Kolkata.
Dilashi Hemnani, who hails from another state, was in Kolkata last week in connection with a marketing job for the private company she is employed with. In her Facebook post, she has written that she went to Mocambo around 08.40 pm on 09 September to have dinner before flying out of the city the next day.
She took along with her Manish bhaiya ~ the driver of cab that she availed of all through the week in Kolkata. This was because during the day Manish had skipped lunch because Dilashi, busy in her marketing meetings, forget to ask him to go for lunch. “Guilty of my mistake, I decided to go out for dinner with him,” she writes.
“He was cleanly dressed in a cream trouser and a shirt tucked out …and floaters” But after having made Dilashi and Manish wait at the lobby for 15 minutes, the staff at Mocambo declined them an entry because they considered the driver “not properly dressed” for “a fine dine restaurant.”
This resulted in an argument between Dilashi and the staff and in the course of this they even falsely accused that the driver was drunk. Finding his hostess in such an awkward situation, Manish urged her to dine alone and offered to wait outside. But Dilashi instead chose to walkout of the “racist restaurant” and then shared her experience in an elaborate post on Facebook.
Despite Dilashi’s post going viral on and people calling for boycotting Mocambo, the management has so far been unapologetic about the treatment. It said that their staff had declined them an entry because the driver was not properly dressed and allowing him in would have angered other guests.
