Siliguri, 20 April: SHE had just attained the legal age for marriage and was weaving dreams of starting a nuptial life with a man that her family had selected!
But that was not a happen, as the demand for dowry by the groom’s family has now led to the death of 19-year-old Mumpy Roy of Kalirhat at Dhupguri in Jalpaiguri district.
Mumpy, who lost her father a few years ago, used to live with her widow mother and she recently finalised her marriage with the help of her borther-in-law.
Mumpy’s elder cousin brother Sushanta Roy said that she was to be married to Pradip Roy of Bhangarhat in Cooch Behar and the Ashirbad ceremony was to be held on 23 April.
“The groom’s family had demanded Rs 80,000 in cash and a motorbike as dowry. We expressed inability to meet the demands and assured giving Rs 55,000 and a bike. But the groom’s father called off the marriage on Tuesday and this pushed my sister into depression,” Sushanta said.
Unable to withstand the humiliation, Mumpy drank pesticide at her home yesterday. Family members took her to Jalpaiguri District Hospital in a critical condition, where the girl breathed her last today morning.
Following this, the bereaved family lodged a complaint against the groom’s family at Dhupguri police station accusing them of abatement to suicide.
