Kolkata: A junior doctor has been injured and some bed’s damaged at Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute at Hazra in the city in an attack by the relatives of a patient who died this afternoon.
Cancer afflicted patient named Gopal Koyal of Tollygunge was brought to the hospital by family members around noon over acute breathing trouble. Koyal, suffering from oral cancer, was receiving outdoor treatment at the hospital for some time and hence the family rushed him there.
As alleged by the relatives, instead of admitting him to the emergency ward, doctors asked them to take Koyal to the outdoor for a check-up by the doctor who treats him routinely. Accordingly, the family took him to the outdoor only to be told that the doctor concerned is in the operation theatre and will be free only at 5 pm.
Nearly two hours passed by as the family continued to move from one ward to another with an acutely ill Koyal. In the absence of medical intervention, he passed away a little later.
Angry over this, members of his family and relatives went berserk. They broke some beds in the male ward and assaulted a junior doctor named Pratik Sit. With the situation going out of control, the hospital authorities informed the police.
Within a few minutes, a team from Bhowanipore police station arrived and brought the situation under control. Two members of the patient party were arrested for the vandalism, while a police picket has been posted at the hospital to pre-empt any further violence.
