Kolkata, 24 April: SUSPENDED Enforcement Directorate officer Manoj Kumar today appeared at Shakespeare Sarani police station in the city in connection with the extortion case against him that Kolkata Police are probing.
Kumar, formerly an assistant director at ED’s regional office in Kolkata, went to Shakespeare Sarani police station around 2.30 in the afternoon and walked out around 8.30 pm.
Police sources said that he was questioned for about six hours on the allegations of extortion on money from traders by misusing his official position. Police recorded his statement as well.
Kumar was suspended by ED in February after his close relationship with the wife of scam-hit Rose Valley Group chairman Gautam Kundu came to light. ED has been probing Rose Valley Group for money laundering.
Soon after this, a chartered accountant named Kamal Sahani lodged a complaint at Shakespeare Sarani police station alleging that Kumar had collected a bribe of Rs 40-lakh from him over alleged discrepancies in the tax accounts of traders that Sahani was handling.
Probing into the allegation, police arrested Pradip Hirawat, an alleged agent of Kumar, and found out that Rs 6-7 crore had been transacted through his bank accounts. Hirawat could not give satisfactory answer as regards the source of this money, making the police suspect that those money could have been extorted by Kumar through Hirawat.
While Kumar has been allowed to walk out today, police sources said that he would be summoned for questioning again. In the meantime, police would tally the information that they have extracted from him with that of Hirawat, who is in jail custody now.
