Kolkata, 12 August: A former councillor of Trinamool at Salt Lake in Kolkata, who switched over to BJP earlier this year, has been arrested on charges of forgery.
Anupam Dutta was arrested by Bidhannagar Police in the wee hours today from near Kolkata airport. Police claimed that Dutta was trying to flee from the city.
Dutta was a member of the chairman-in-council of Trinamool ruled North Dum Dum Municipality a few years ago; later he became a Trinamool councillor of Bidhannagar Municipality (Salt Lake) until 2015 when the party declined to nominate him again for the election.
Dutta contested the Bidhannagar civic polls in 2015 as an Independent but lost due to alleged massive rigging by Trinamool. He joined the BJP in February this year.
Police today arrested him on charges of mediating in the sale of a flat at Salt Lake BD Block when he was a member of the chairman-in-council of North Dum Dum Municipality. In connivance with a broker, he allegedly sold the flat for Rs 1-crore using false land deeds and without the knowledge of the original owner.
Although the allegation is old, a complaint to police was lodged only a few days ago. The cops first arrested the broker Madhusudhan Chakraborty and after questioning him, netted Dutta in the wee hours today.
The former councillor was produced in Bidhannagar Sub-divisional Court during the day and the judge remanded him to five days police custody. While being taken away from court, Dutta told journalists he had been arrested under a conspiracy for raising voice against Trinamool.
State food minister and Trinamool leader Jyotipriya Mullick, who also love in Salt Lake, said that BJP should realise what kind of people they were inducting in the party.
