Kolkata: POLICE today resorted to a lathi-charge and arrested 19 Congress workers, including MLA Manoj Chakraborty, for trying to block the car of the state election commissioner Amarendra Kumar Singh in front of the poll panel office in Kolkata.
Several Congress workers have suffered injuries in the lathi-charge but the injuries are not grievous.
Congress had organised a demonstration in front of the State Election Commission (SEC) office on Rowdon Street in Kolkata against the poll panel’s failure to stop the attacks on Opposition party candidates in several districts allegedly by Trinamool while filing of nominations for the upcoming Panchayat polls.
Former minister of the state and Congress MLA from Behrampore in Murshidabad was leading the demonstration. During this, the state election commissioner Singh arrived in his official car. As the car tried to drive into the poll panel office through the demonstrators, the Congress cadres blocked its way and demanded that the commissioner should walk in.
The large posse of police personnel deployed at the poll panel office jumped into action at once. They first tried pushing away the Congress agitators and when this did not yield a result, the cops resorted to a lathi-charge leaving several Congress workers injured.
The action paved way for the election commissioner’s car to roll into his office. Police then arrested MLA Chakraborty and 18 others for the agitation.
Meanwhile, election commissioner Singh today held a meeting with the district observers for the Panchayat polls and asked them to do their duties without fear or favour.
