Behrampore: FORMER MLA-MP and Trinamool Murshidabad district president Abdul Mannan Hossain is no more.
He passed away at a private nursing home in Kolkata this afternoon due to kidney-related ailments. Hossain was 65 and is survived by wife, two sons and two daughters.
Family sources said that about two years ago, doctors had to operate out a kidney of Hossain as it stopped functioning. His second kidney also started malfunctioning earlier this year and he underwent a kidney transplant about three months ago.
Just as he was recuperating after the transplant, Hossain’s health condition deteriorated two weeks ago. His family got him admitted to the private nursing home in Kolkata where he had undergone the transplant. Failing the efforts of the doctors, he breathed his last today afternoon.
Hossain originally began his political career with the Congress and was elected an MLA from Murshidabad Assembly seat in 1987. He suffered defeat in the next Assembly election and revert back as a Congress MP from Murshidabad Lok Sabha seat in 2004.
Hossain was re-elected to the Lok Sabha from the same constituency in 2009 and served as an MP until 2014. It was after this that the seasoned politician switched over to Trinamool over alleged differences with the Bengal Congress president Adhir Ranjan Choudhury.
On joining Trinamool, he was made the president of the party’s district committee in Murshidabad. In the past few years, under the guidance of state minister Suvendu Adhikari, he has strengthened Trinamool in the district, virtually decimating Congress and CPI-M.
