Kolkata, 10 August: A fresh student agitation has broken out at Jadavpur University in Kolkata over the state government’s directive to replace elected students’ union with that of a nominated students’ council.
Under the umbrella of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students’ Union (FETSU), thousands of students are carrying on a sit-in demonstration at JU’s administrative building Aurobindo Bhavan from early in the afternoon.
The demonstration began coinciding a meeting of the varsity’s executive council at Aurobindo Bhavan. The students shouting slogans and holding placards are agitating blocking the entry to the building.
Representatives of the agitating students served a memorandum to vice-chancellor Suranjan Das by getting into the executive council meeting. Their demand is that EC should reject state government’s directive for having nominated students’ council and treat this as infringement on the varsity’s autonomy. Students say that a nominated council means the authority will pick their ‘yes men’ and hence the students will lose a say if fee is hiked or someone is punished for invalid reasons.
The VC, however, outright rejected the demand. This made the students to declare that they would continue with the demonstration until their demand was met and the EC members, including VC, could go home only by trampling them.
