Kolkata, 15 August: COMING down heavily over the ragging of a first year student, the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, in Howrah has rusticated a second year student from the institute.

This apart, four senior students have been suspended from classes and another three have been suspended from the institute hostel until further notice.

According to IIEST director professor Ajoy Kumar Ray, on receiving a complaint about the ragging, they constituted a four member probe panel to investigate the matter. “The panel submitted its report on Thursday, after which our anti-ragging committee discussed the findings on Friday and recommended the punitive action,” he said.

The rusticated student has been identified as Aman Kumar who was studying in the second year.

The incident took place on the night of 4 August, when Aman had allegedly summoned to his hostel a first year student, who lives in another hotel. The first year student was then subjected to teasing and abuse by Aman and his co-boarders. Unable to take the humiliation, the first year student lost his cool and punched a window pane inuring his fingers in the process.

To hush up the matter, the accused students took him to a nearby hospital without informing the IIEST authorities. Later when the incident came to light, the first year student lodged a complaint with the institute authorities.

“We show zero tolerance against ragging in the institute. The suspension of the accused students will continue until further order. If we find an improvement in their behaviour, their suspension might be repealed in the future,” the IIEST director added.
