Siliguri: SENIOR office bearers of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) Kalimpong district unit, including the Kalimpong MLA, have resigned from the party today saying that they were confused by the feud in the party between Bimal Gurung and Binay Tamang factions.
The leaders who announced their resignation today include GJM Kalimpong district president RB Bhujel, general secretary Kumar Chamling, central committee vice-president Kalyan Dewan, central committee member Vijay Sundas, Kalimpong Municipality chairman Subha Pradhan, and Kalimpong MLA Sarita Rai.
They said that while people of the Hills are still dedicated to the cause of Gorkhaland, there was widespread confusion about the party due to the on-going tussle between Bimal Gurung and Binay Tamang camps. They maintained that they will not join any other political party. Sarita Rai said she will continue to be an unattached MLA.
Political observers, however, said that the Kalimpong leaders have taken the step in view of ever-mounting pressure from Binay Tamang camp to ditch Bimal Gurung. “By resigning from the party, they want to send out a signal that they are not with any camp in particular. But if Bimal Gurung is able to make a comeback in the Hills politics, they are likely to side with him again,” an observer said.
Kalimpong is the only part in the Hills that have not come under the control of Binay Tamang camp as yet. This is even as his follower councillors of Kalimpong Municipality yesterday moved a no-confidence motion against the pro-Bimal Gurung board headed by chairman Subha Pradhan.
