Kolkata, 31 October: AN iron structure put in place to hold the concrete casting for proposed metro railway station near Behala Tram Depot in the city caved in last night raising questions about the quality of work.
The incident took place late last night when work on concrete casting had just begun at the site. Behind located along the busy Diamond Harbour Road, the construction work is being carried out at night.
According to officials, as the casting was on, a portion of the iron structure suddenly came lose towards the ground. Although none was injured in the incident, the work was stalled at once and traffic movement on Diamond Harbour Road was suspended for about three hours until a safety check was run.
The proposed station is part of the 18.72 km Joka – BBD Bag Metro Line that is being built under the aegis of Central PSU Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. The master contractor of the project is construction giant L&T, which is carrying out the work either directly or through sub-contractors.
Last night’s incident has put a question mark of the quality of construction and monitoring along a busy strength through which lakhs of people commute every day. A few months ago a word spread about a newly laid viaduct of the under-construction Metro Line at Behala developing a crack, but this was later negated by Mayor Sovan Chatterjee following a personal visit to the site.
