Kolkata, 16 November: EVEN as the Bengal State Election Commission is still dragging its feet on introducing NOTA option for panchayt and civic body polls in the state, Jadavpur University has decided to include the same in the ballots for its upcoming student union poll.
This will be a first among all educational institutes in West Bengal and second in the country after Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University. NOTA was introduced by the Election Commission for all Assembly or Lok Sabha elections in the country with effect from 2014.
Jadavpur University’s dean of students Rajat Ray said that the University Grants Commission wrote to them in July asking to explore the possibility of including NOTA option in the ballots for student polls.
“We communicated the same in a meeting with the present elected student union and they said they were okay with the idea. Hence, NOTA will be included in the ballots for our student union election that is scheduled for 25 January,” Roy said.
It will be after a year’s gap that student union poll will be held in Jadavpur University; the election could not be held last year as the state government has stopped the same for all colleges and varsities in the state due to Assembly polls.
Nominations for the union elections this time will be accepted on 10-11 January and the last day for withdrawal of candidature is 13 January. Votes will be taken from 10 am on 25 January and the counting would be on 27 January.
Jadavpur University has all along been a bastion of Left-leaning student politics and not much has changed here even after Trinamool captured state power in 2011.
