Kolkata, 18 July: POLICE have arrested a psychiatrist from Salt Lake in Kolkata for the death of a patient who was under his treatment.
Dr Roop Kumar Brahma was arrested by Bidhannagar East police station from his residence at Salt Lake last night and he has now been sent to 14 days jail custody by the Bidhannagar additional chief judicial magistrate. Brahma is attached to a residential private mental health clinic at Salt Lake.
The arrest comes after the family of Ranadeep Basu of Harinavi in South 24-Parganas lodged a complaint against Brahma and the clinic management over the death of Basu at the clinic on 20 May.
Basu, an automobile engineer, was admitted to the clinic in mid-April as he was suffering from severe depression. On 20 May, his family got a call from the clinic saying that Basu had passed away due to a cardiac arrest.
Not convinced by the reason, his family lodged a complaint at Bidhannagar East police station and thus the cops referred the body for post-mortem. The autopsy report revealed that Basu had multiple injuries in his body including in head and stomach.
Following the revelation, police converted the complaint into an FIR against Brahma and the clinic management under Indian Penal Code section 304 that pertains to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, or unintentional murder, in layman’s language.
The FIR has now led to the arrest of the psychiatrist and him being sent to jail custody. His lawyer has said that they would move higher court challenging the order.
