Kolkata, 13 October: THE City of Joy, Kolkata, is all geared up to witness the first-ever parade of Durga idols at historic Red Road in central Kolkata on Friday.
The parade, conceived by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, would kick off at 05 pm and is scheduled to continue until 08 pm. The idea is to give people a chance to see the best Durga idols of the city at one place.
As many as 39 idols selected by Kolkata Police, Kolkata Municipal Corporation, and the state information & cultural affairs department from amongst the community Durga Pujas from all over Kolkata, would take part in the parade.
The parade would start from Fort William’s south gate end and passing through Red Road, it would culminate at the Eden Gardens stadium end. The idols would the head to Babughat for immersion in the river Hooghly.
Mamata Banerjee, her Cabinet colleagues, and senior bureaucrats of the state government would remain present ar Red Road to witness the occasion.
Each of the selected Puja committees would bring in their idols, along with the themes of their respective pandals, in the form of tableau on truck. The number of trucks, as specific by the police, is minimum three and maximum five.
Common people would be allowed entry on first-come-first-served basis into the temporary gallery erected on either side of Red Road. Besides this, a number of giant projection screens have also been put around the Red Road for people to catch a glimpse of the event live.
Kolkata Police have made massive arrangements to ensure that the event passes off smoothly. This includes deployment of around 2,000 policemen headed by 15 officers of divisional commissioner rank, and erection of 12 temporary watch towers in and around Red Road from where policemen would keep a hawk eye on the audience.
There will be no entry for vehicles from 03 pm on Red Road, Mayo Road, and Khidderpore Road. This apart, traffic movement would be restricted through nearby Casuarina Avenue, Hospital Road, and Kings Way all through the event.
Both ABP Ananda and 24-Ghanta have announced that they would live telecast the first ever parade of Durga idols from Red Road.
