Kolkata, 20 April: OPPOSITION Left, Congress, and BJP today corned the ruling Trinamool at Kolkata Municipal Corporation and Congress workers also hit the street on the Naradanews bribe issue.
Their only refrain: Mayor Sovan Chatterjee and deputy mayor Iqbal Ahmed, who were caught taking bribe by Naradanews Sting Operation, must step down at once from bringing shame to Kolkata. This is especially when the CBI has earlier this week registered FIR against them along with 10 other Trinamool leaders and a serving IPS officer.
To press for the demand, Left, Congress, and BJP councillors today took to sloganeering right at the start of KMC’s monthly meeting early in the afternoon. They hung placards from their neck that called the Mayor and his deputy as thieves and bribe-takers.
As the sloganeering met with a counter from Trinamool, the Left and Congress councillors staged a walkout from the meeting. BJP councillors followed suit soon after. All of them then held a demonstration in front of the chambers of the Mayor and the chairperson.
“Deshabandhu Chittaranjan Das and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose had been the Mayor of Kolkata. Sitting in the same chair, Sovan Chatterjee has taken bribe. He is a shame not only to KMC but the city as a whole, and hence he must resign at once,” CPI-M councillor Mritunjay Chakraborty said taking Congress and BJP councillors by his side.
While this was going on inside KMC, outside Youth Congress workers were jostling with police after the men in uniform stopped them from marching into KMC over the demand for Mayor and deputy mayor’s resignation.
Youth Congress workers had taken out a rally from Subodh Mullick Square and moved through SN Banerjee Road to reach KMC. But a large posse of policemen posted in advance stopped the rally much ahead of KMC. Those in the rally tried to force their way through the barricade, resulting in a scuffle with police.
The Youth Congress workers finally relented and ended their rally by burning the effigies of the Mayor and deputy mayor while shouting slogans calling for their resignation and arrest. Police arrested a few protesters and took them to Lalbazar.
