Kolkata, 27 February: LATE night reckless biking on the streets of Kolkata has once again claimed the lives of unruly youths.
A teenage boy and his teenage girlfriend died late yesterday night after falling off the Kamalgaji Flyover that connects EM Bypass to the Baruipur Bypass off Garia on the southern fringes of Kolkata.
The victims have been identified as Rahul Banerjee and Payel Guha. The later was appearing for her school final (Madhyamik). They were residents of Regent Park near Tollygunge.
Police said that the two, along their friends Aman Sau and Sushmita Kundu, had set out on a bike tour from Regent Park to Baruipur Bypass around 11 pm yesterday night. Payel was riding pillion to Rahul; Sushmita was riding pillion to Aman.
None of the boys at the wheels had driving licence, and nor the motorbikes belonged to them. They had borrowed the motorbikes from friends to take girlfriends on a late night ride.
As the teenagers were driving down the Kamalgaji Flyover at a high speed, the bike of the first group of Rahul and Payel hit the railing. The collision was so intense that Payel fell off the flyover on to the EM Bypass several feet down below.
A team from Sonarpur police station subsequently took them to a private nursing home at Mahamayatala where both Rahul and Payel were declared brought. The cops have detained Aman and Sushmita have booked the former for driving without licence endangering public life.
