Kolkata, 23 May: STATE government today moved and got passed a censure motion in the Assembly against Left and Congress MLAs for resorting to “un-parliamentary activities” within the premises of the legislature.

This came on a day the Left and Congress legislators shouted slogans inside the House and then staged a walkout against police atrocities on Left workers yesterday who were trying to march to state secretariat Nabanna over 18-point charter of demands. The opposition MLAs had carried placards, and black flags to the House.

Moving the censure motion, state parliamentary affairs minister Partha Chatterjee said that the opposition was trying to violate the sanctity of the Assembly by resorting to unruly activities.

“They have been rejected by people. Now, being completely isolated from the masses, they are trying to disrupt the Assembly session by creating trouble. A section of the MLAs are neither raising any issue related to their constituencies not are they allowing others to speak,” Chatterjee said.

“They are behaving violently even making the marshals feel threatened,” the minister added, urging Speaker Biman Banerjee to take necessary action against the Left and Congress MLAs under Rule 325 of the state Assembly that provides for suspension of unruly legislators.

Chatterjee also condemned the attack on police personnel by Left Front workers during the march to Nabanna.

Before adopting the censure motion, Speaker Biman Banerjee said that “some members are carrying placards, posters, banners and many other things to the House. Members have to abide by the Assembly rules that mandate that no member could interrupt others during a speech.”

“I have noticed speakers being interrupted and passing remarks being made. Work is getting disrupted due to such activities,” he said hinting at punitive action against opposition MLAs in the next few days.

Unfazed by this, Left and Congress MLAs called on the Governor at Raj Bhavan in the afternoon and lodged a complaint against the state government’s authoritarian style of function wherein police are even taking on elected members.

Left parties also took out a protest march in the city against the police brutalities on their workers and journalists yesterday. Some senior Congress leaders participated in the rally.
