Kolkata, 29 June: SABITA Chowdhury, singer and the second wife of legendary composer Salil Chowdhury, passed away in Kolkata in the wee hours today.
She was 72 and is survived by two daughters and two sons. Her eldest daughter singer Antara Chowdhury, at whose house she breather her last around 2 am today, said that her mother was battling cancer since January this year.
After being admitted a hospital in Mumbai for a few months, she was relocated to Antara’s house in Kolkata as doctors had given up on her.
Getting to know of her demise, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said in a condolence message that it amounted to the loss of a dear one and had caused irreparable loss to the world of music-culture.
“In recognition of her contribution to Bengali music, our state government had conferred her with Sangeet Mahasamman award in 2013. I offer my deepest respect to her departed soul and extend condolences to her dear ones,” Banerjee said.
Salil Chowdhury had married Sabita after breaking up with his first wife Jyoti. Subsequently, Sabita stepped into singing with inspiration from her composer husband and sang several hit numbers both in Bengali and Hindi.
Some of her famous Bengali songs include ~ Surer Ei Jhar Jhar Jharna, Prajapati-Prajapati, Bou Kotha Kao Bole Pakhi, Oi Jhilmil Jhauyer Bone, and Bhalo Lage Na.
