Siliguri, 14 August: SECURITY agencies went into a tizzy on Friday after the Sashstra Seema Bal (SSB) jawans found two live bombs in a bus at Fulbari about 9 km off Siliguri town.
The private bus was coming to Siliguri from Cooch Behar and SSB jawans intercepted it at Fulbari around 1.30 pm, after getting a tip off that explosives were being transported in it. The two bombs that later turned out to be locally made crude bombs, were found hidden in a shopping bag amidst potatoes.
SSB jawans soon asked the passengers to vacate the bus and detained one Somnath Ray, near whom the shopping bag was found. Both Siliguri Police and the CID Bomb Disposal Squad were called in.
On the Bomb Disposal Squad’s arrival around 2.45 pm, police suspended traffic movement on the busy Siliguri-Jalpiaguri National Highway 31D and cordoned off the shopping bag that contained the bombs.
The Bomb Disposal Squad personnel took nearly two hours to defuse the crude bombs at an isolated place beside the National Highway at Fulbari. All this while, a large number of vehicles remained stranded at the either end of the road; the road was reopened to traffic around 5 pm.
Police later let off the man detained by SSB after he said that he had boarded the bus from Raninagar, which is about 25 km off Fulbari, and had no knowledge of the shopping bag. The bus crew and some co-passengers corroborated his version.
