Kolkata: A young divorcee woman, who used to live-in with a man of nearly her age, has been found dead in a flat at Charu Market police station area in south Kolkata. Acting on a complaint from her parents, police have arrested her live-in partner on charges of abatement to suicide.
The deceased has been identified as Urmi Das; her arrested partner’s name is Sudipta Das, who is a struggling businessman. They used to live in in a rented apartment at Charu Chandra Place East for the past six months.
Sudipta has told police that he had an argument with Urmi yesterday afternoon and left the flat. On returning at night, when Urmi did not open the door despite repeated knocks, he broke open the door to find her hanging from a ceiling fan. She was taken to MR Bangur Hospital at Tollygunge, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Her father Uttam Das subsequently lodged a complaint with police accusing Sudipta of harassing her and raising questions about the cause of her death. This made police arrest Sudipta early this morning.
Family sources said that the deceased woman had been in a relationship with another youth and they registered their marriage in February this year. But even before the social marriage could happen, a discord cropped up between them. This made Urmi sever the relationship and seek a divorce from the registry marriage.
During this phase, she met Sudipta and soon fell from him. But with the divorce suit still on, they could not marry each other. Thus, the two started living in a rented apartment at Charu Chandra Place East.
Urmi’s family alleged that Sudipta used to suspect her all the time thinking that she might go back to her previous relationship. He used to take exception whenever any male friend called her. This often used to result in a commotion between them.
