Malda, 22 August: A WOMAN at Harishchandrapur in West Bengal’s Malda district has suffered ninety-five per cent burns and is now battling for life after her husband allegedly threw acid on her on suspicion of infidelity.
The woman has been identified as Chumki Das and her accused husband, Gopal Das, is now absconding.
According to police, Chumki got married to Gopal four years ago and they have a three year old daughter. But ever since their marriage, Gopal always objected to her interacting with their neighbours at Thanapara, especially the males, and used to suspect her of indulging in infidelity.
The couple had fought over the issue several times in the past. On Friday evening, Gopal saw his wife talking to a youth from the neighbourhood. Apparently, angry over this he threw acid on Chumki at the dead of night while she was fast asleep.
Her wailing woke up the neighbours, who took her to hospital, while Gopal fled at once. The neighbours called up the police as well.
Later, Chumki’s mother lodged an FIR against Gopal at the Harishchandrapur police station. The FIR mentions that Gopal has all along been suspicious by nature and always used to object to his wife interacting with any man.
