Kolkata, 18 October: TRINAMOOL Lok Sabha MP and Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee has been grievously injured in a road accident.
The 28-year-old first-time MP from Diamond Harbour was returning to Kolkata from Behrampore in Murshidabad by road when the accident took place at Singur around 04 pm this afternoon. He had gone to Behrampore for a Trinamool public meeting.
Abhishek was travelling in a convoy of three cars ~ one pilot car each was moving at the front and behind and his white Mahindra Scorpion was at the centre. Behind his convoy was the car of Manas Bhunia, chairman of Bengal Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee.
Preliminary reports suggest that a speeding lorry coming from Kolkata-end bypassed Abhishek’s front pilot car and hit his car head-on near Himadri Chemicals at Singur on Durgapur Expressway. Following this, his car and a pilot car from his convoy overturned on the road.
Those travelling in other cars behind Abhishek, including Manas Bhunia, at once came out of their cars and rescued Abhishek in a grievously injured condition. He has sustained grievous injures in his face, head, shoulder, and legs. Some of his companions have also been injured.
Abhishek was subsequently taken in a car of his security guards and rushed to Belle Vue Clinic at Minto Park in south Kolkata where he was admitted at 05.27 pm. He has been admitted in an intensive care unit and a team of specialised doctors are attending on him.
Senior Trinamool leaders and ministers are reaching the nursing home one by one. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is also likely to visit the nursing home later this evening.
