Kolkata, 5 June: The mortal remains of Naik Dipak Kumar Maity, martyred in a terrorist attack in Jammu & Kashmir on 3 Jun, were cremated at his native village in West Midnapore today.
The 43 year old soldier was travelling from Udhampur to Srinagar as part of an Army convoy when they came under fire from terrorists at Qazigund in Kashmir Valley. Two soldiers, along with Maity, were killed, and six others were injured in the attack.
The dead body of Naik Dipak Maity was flown in to Kolkata last night and kept at the Army’s Command Hospital at Alipore in the city. Today morning, after laying wreaths on the martyr, the mortal remains were taken to his native village Masagram, Sabang in West Midnapore district.
Thousands of people lined up by the streets to bid farewell to the martyr from their village. Military, civil, and police officials paid homage before the cremation was performed with full military honours.
The martyred soldier is survived by wife Rikta and minor daughter Riya Maity. He had got married on 29 January 2001.
