Kolkata: A massive fire has broken out in a storehouse of the Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) at Armenian Ghat near Howrah Bridge.
The fire started around 8 pm and till about midnight, 24 fire tenders have not been able to contain the fire.
The storehouse is located at 20 Armenian Ghat Street bang opposite to Howrah railway station on the other bank of Hooghly river. KopT had leased out the facility, spread over a few thousand square metres on the bank of Hooghly river, to several private firms.
According to Kolkata Mayor and state fire minister Sovan Chatterjee, at least 10 barrels of diesel and several LPG cylinders were stored in the storeroom. It is not clear as to how the fire started.
With the fire raging, people leaving in nearby slums have been relocated from the area and traffic to and from Howrah railway station have been diverted avoiding the stretch of Strand Road that passed in front of Armenian Ghat.
Even as the firefighters have managed to move out six LPG cylinders and a few barrels of diesel from the storeroom, at least two cylinders or barrels have burst aggravating the fire.
