Midnapore, 20 April: A mob today severely beat up a police inspector in West Midnapore district when he went to take stock of the situation following an accident that killed two school students. They also damaged the police car in which the inspector was travelling.
Biswajit Saha, inspector-in-charge of Salboni police station, is now admitted to Midnapore Medical College and Hospital with blunt injuries all over his body.
The incident took place around 10 this morning on National Highway-14 at Bhadutala area under West Midnapore’s Salboni police station. A 10-wheeled trailer truck, which was heading towards Salboni, lost control and dashed onto an auto-rickshaw ferrying 13 students to school.
The accident left two of the students ~ Baisakhi Murmu of class V and Sandeep Adhikari of class VI ~ dead, while the remaining 11 were critically injured. Residents of the area rushed the injured to Midnapore Medical College and Hospital, and from there, four were subsequently referred to Kolkata.
Peeved at the accident, a group of local people blocked the National Highway-14 at Bhadutala, brining traffic to a grinding halt. Getting to know of this, a police team led by Salboni inspector-in-charge Biswajit Saha went to the spot and tried to persuade the agitators to lift the blockade.
The agitators got furious at the suggestion, alleging that accidents involving trucks have become a routine in the area, but police keep mum as they collect bribe from all the goods-carrying lorries. A section of them soon started assaulting the police inspector.
The mob went on beating the police officer left and right. As he stumbled onto the highway, some of them even kicked him. There were two armed police constables with the inspector: they tried persuading the agitators to stop the assault but did not apply any force to protect their officer.
The inspector finally has to flee from the spot to save his life and another police vehicle lifted him after he had covered some distance. The officer is now admitted to Midnapore Medical College and Hospital.
Bhadutala where the police inspector came under attack is a notified Maoist insurgency hit area and had seen massive bloodbath until 2011.
