Kolkata, 18 September: A group of youths armed with iron rods and lathis stormed into the upscale Fort Oasis residential complex at Panditiya Place in Ballygunge today morning and broke as many as 70 private cars parked inside.
The attack came after a youth was mowed dead and two others were critically injured by a speeding Mercedes near Paramount Nursing Home on Hazra Road in the wee hours today around 02.45 am. The three were on a scooter.
The angry youths also vandalised some bicycles belonging to children and the entry lounge to the high-rise residential complex, which is occupied by several affluent businessmen, high officials belonging to both Bengal and the Central government departments.
The damaged cars belong to those staying in the complex and several of them had stickers pasted proclaiming them as being employed by Bengal government, Central government, and Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
Eyewitnesses said that while on its way from Hazra to Ballygunge, an ash colour Mercedes dashed a scooter near Paramount Nursing Home around 2.45 am. Following this, three youths who were on the scooter suffered severe injuries; they hailed from nearby Panditiya Road.
On being taken to SSKM Hospital, one of them Abhijit Pandey (22) died. The condition of the two others is critical.
After dashing the scooter, the Mercedes, which was reportedly being driven by a woman with two men on board, sped away. The three occupants abandoned the Mercedes on the road near Fort Oasis residential complex.
Alleging that the killer Mercedes belonged to one Santosh Rani Gupta of Fort Oasis, some 50-60 youths from Panditiya Road forayed into the residential complex today morning and broke some 70-odd cars, a few bicycles belonging to children, and the entry lounge.
The situation was brought under control by a police team that rushed into the complex on being informed by the residents.
