Behrampore, 20 April: A 17-year-old girl has committed suicide at a village in Murshidabad district after her parents fixed her marriage while she wanted to pursue higher education.
Nirjala Bagdi, who was a class XI student of Bahara Acharya Ramendra Sundar Vidyalaya, was found hanging from a tree near her house at Anukha villager under Kandi police station area today morning.
Her father Ananda Bagdi, who is a sharecropper, said that he wanted to marry off his daughter because the family’s financial condition was not sound to support her education any further.
“I fixed her marriage with a boy from Sainthia in Birbhum. She objected to this saying that she wanted to study further. But when I explained, she did not say anything more,” the father said at Kandi Sub-division Hospital while waiting to collect the dead body of his daughter after post-mortem.
Nirjala’s marriage was fixed for 28 April Friday. She went to bed last night after dinner, but on waking up today morning, family members found her missing from her bedroom. It was then that they started looking for Nirjala only to find her hanging from a tree by a river in the village.
