Diamond Harbour, 18 May: POLICE at Nodakhali in South 24-Parganas have arrested a man after his newlywed wife was found dead yesterday on the ninth-day of their marriage.
Parents of the girl, Kakali Koyal, 18, allege that she has been murdered over dowry and for coming to know about a physical relationship her husband with the wife of his elder brother. They have lodged a complaint of murder against the accused husband and his family.
Kakali, who had appeared for the higher secondary final in March this year, got married to Kunal Adhikari of Dakshin Bowali village under Nodakhali police station on 8 May. Yesterday she returned with her husband after a ritualistic tour, named Asthamangala, to her parents’ house.
Later in the night Kakali was found dead in her bedroom and there were some injury marks on her body. She is suspected to have died of poisoning. Her husband took her to a local hospital where doctors declared her dead.
On getting to know of this, residents of the village and the relatives of the deceased girl held a demonstration in front of Nodakhali police station demanding arrest of the husband and his family members. Subsequently, her parents lodged a complaint with police, leading to the arrest on Kunal Adhikari for violence for dowry and abetment to suicide.
Seema Koyal, mother of the girl, alleged that despite giving several costly items during the marriage, Kunal had demanded Rs 50,000 in dowry. She also alleged that soon after marriage, her daughter found out that Kunal was into an extra-marital affair with a relative.
Police, for now, are waiting for the post-mortem report to ascertain the exact cause of the newlywed’s death. Her arrested husband, who was produced at the Alipore today, has been remanded to police custody.
