Siliguri, 30 July: AFTER Sukna near Siliguri yesterday, Jaigaon in Alipurduar district today turned into a battlefield following clashes between Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) and the police.
The clash has left a policeman injured after GJM agitators threw a stone at him. Two GJM cadres have also been injured.
Trouble broke out after GJM cadres took out a rally at Jaigaon around 11 am defying section 144 CrPC imposed by the administration. The rally was part of Global Gorkhaland Unity March to press for the statehood demand.
Police stopped the rally comprising near 1,000 GJM cadres, resulting in a confrontation. GJM cadres tried to move ahead by breaking the police barricade: they pelted stones at the cops injuring one.
The cops responded by using water cannon. But unable to control the violent GJM cadres, they then resorted to a lathi-charge and firing of teargas shells. Two GJM cadres were injured in this.
GJM chief Bimal Gurung has termed the police action “undemocratic” and said that the cops exerted force on GJM cadres without any provocation.
Meanwhile, Nepali-dominated Milan More area near Siliguri today remained shut through the day in protest against police stopping a GJM machete rally at Sukna yesterday and resulting to the injury of two GJM cadres. Two policemen were also injured in the clash.
