Arrested teachers Abhishek Roy and Md Mafizzudin were produced in the Alipore court in the city today afternoon amidst tight police security to avert any public backlash. The Bar Association at Alipore court had resolved that no lawyer will represent the two.
But during the hearing, advocate Tirthankar Roy stood up to defend the two defying the Bar Association. Roy soon got entangled in a verbal dual with the prosecution lawyer Priyanka Tibrewal and the father of the victim girl who was present in the courtroom.
As the argument and cross-argument were on, chief judicial magistrate Debasish Burman discovered that Jadavpur police station, which is probing the case, has submitted a photocopy of the FIR and not the original one as is required by the law. Defence counsel Roy raised the matter, making the judge hold back his ruling for a few hours.
Police finally produced the original FIR copy. After this, the judge ordered that the two accused be sent to two days police remand. They will be produced in the Alipore court again on Monday.
