Kolkata, 12 January: POLICE have declined permission for a public meeting of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat that was to be held in Kolkata on 14 January, Saturday.
A communique to this effect from Kolkata Police reached the RSS office Keshab Bhawan in the city today.
It has been stated that 14 January being Makar Sankranti, a large number of police personnel will be engaged in handling the pilgrims going to the Gangasagar Mela via Kolkata. Hence, the city police would not be able to deploy personnel required to maintain the crowd at Mohan Bhagwat’s public meeting and the accompanying parade of RSS activists.
Earlier, the police had given permission for Bhagwat’s public meeting at the Shaheed Minar ground. But on being informed that there would be a parade of RSS volunteers as well, police later withdrew the permission.
Following this, RSS applied afresh to Kolkata Police for the meeting and parade to be held at the Brigade Parade Ground. Police have now rejected the permission on the grounds of non-availability of personnel on 14 January.
RSS office bearers in the city said that they would move a fresh petition on this in the Calcutta High Court tomorrow seeking the court’s intervention in the matter.
