Siliguri: POLICE have confiscated a large consignment of ganja at Haldibari in Cooch Behar district. The consignment is worth about Rs 28-lakh.

The banned narcotics, originally procured from Manipur, were being smuggled from Meghalaya to Bihar via north Bengal. Police have arrested two persons in this connection.

Prabir Pradhan, the inspector-in-charge of Haldibari police station, said that last night they got a tip-off about a ganja consignment being smuggled from Meghalaya by a truck. Accordingly a highway check was started at once for every single lorry passing through Haldibari.

Finally, a lorry with Nagaland registration no (NL01L-4415), was apprehended on the basis of suspicion. The lorry was carrying cement bags for an on-going railway project at Haldibari.

Police got the cement bags unloaded and then found several sacks of ganja that were hidden under the bottom wooden planks of the lorry. The ganja weighed 555 kgs. Following this, the driver Aanu Mia and his assistant Abdul Majid were arrested. They are from Agartala in Tripura.
