Diamond Harbour, 19 May: WITHIN three days of having got elected on BJP’s ticket, a councillor of Pujali Municipality in South 24-Parganas today defected to the Trinamool.
Rumpa Ghorui had own from ward number 9 of Pujali Municipality by defeating her nearest rival from the Trinamool. This apart, another BJP nominee had won from ward number 3 in the 16 member municipality; Trinamool had won in 12 wards.
Upbeat by the win of two party nominees in a civic body dominated by Trinamool, BJP state president Dilip Ghosh felicitated them only yesterday. But with barely 24-hours having passed since the felicitation, one of them, Rumpa Ghorui, joined the Trinamool this evening.
On switching over to Trinamool, Ghorui said that she has taken the decision after consulting the voters who have elected her. BJP alleged that she has been pressurised to change party, a charge that Trinamool leaders in South 24-Parganas said was utterly false.
In this season, this volte-face, however, in nothing unique. Within minutes of winning the civic elections in Domkal Municipality in Murshidabad on 17 May, a CPI-M and Congress councillor each had joined the Trinamool to be part of the Mamata Banerjee’s “development mission.”
