Kolkata, 09 September: A 12-year old schoolgirl was crushed under the wheels of a speeding bus at Mandir Para, a little away from Ruby Hospital, on E M Bypass around 8.30 am on Wednesday. The killer bus has been confiscated by the police but both the driver and his helper managed to flee.
Angry over the accident, residents blocked the EM Bypass at Mandir Para from around 8.40 am demanding installation of a traffic signal and permanent posting of traffic police personnel at the spot. They demanded immediate arrest of the bus driver as well.
The blockade resulted in a massive traffic snarl on the stretch between Ruby Hospital and Kalikapur. Thousands of office goers, students and other commuters were left stranded with vehicles standing bumper to bumper. The blockade was lifted after about two hours, following police persuasion.
The deceased schoolgirl Rita Sarkar was returning home around 8.30 am on Wednesday after attending a private tuition. Suddenly a speeding bus of Garia station route 007, which was competing with other buses, hit her from behind. The girl stumbled and got crushed under the wheels of the bus.
Local residents immediately rushed her to a nearby private hospital, where the doctors declared her brought dead.
The on-going New Garia – Airport Metro project work and unattended potholes in several places have of late turned a journey along EM Bypass into a real hassle for commuters. Added to this is the rash driving of private buses, which often flout traffic rules to get on board as many passengers they can.
