Kolkata: A restaurant and a footwear shop located at New Market area near Kolkata Municipal Corporation have been gutted in a fire.
The fire broke out around 10.30 am today in the ground floor restaurant named Hotel Raunak as the employees were reading the kitchen for the day’s business. Soon, two LPG cylinders burst in the restaurant at close interval, aggravating the fire.
Before four fire-tenders rushed in from Mirza Ghalib Street located close by within a few minutes of being informed, the fire spread to a footwear shop located next to the restaurant.
Fast arrival of the fire-tenders, however, did not allow the fire to spread to any other shops in the congested commercial area. Fire-fighters managed to douse the flames in a little over an hour.
Fire department sources said that fire extinguishers and sprinklers installed at Hotel Raunak had overshot their validity and hence, were of no help.
