Siliguri, 02 May: AS many as 25 shops have been gutted in a major fire at Birpara in Dooars today morning, resulting in the loss of properties worth about Rs 1-crore.
The fire broke out around 7.30 in the morning in a wooden furniture shop at Birpara’s Din Bazar and soon spread to other business establishments close by. By the time one fire tender each arrived from Falakata and Dhupguri, the flames engulfed 25 shops.
Subsequently, demanding the setting up of a fire service station at Birpara and removal of encroachments by the road, local traders took out a protest rally and also blocked the Birpara-Jaigaon road. This resulted in huge traffic snarl on the arterial road.
The blockade was later withdrawn after a team from Birpara police station rushed in and assured the agitating traders about tabling their demands to high officials. Meanwhile, the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
