Siliguri police officer escapes assassination bid in Darjeeling Hills

Siliguri, 15 July: A deputy commissioner of Siliguri police commissionerate narrowly escaped an assassination bid by suspected Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) cadres at Dudhia in Mirik subdivision.

Gaurav Lal, was on his way back to Siliguri from Mirik this afternoon when a group of GJM youths, who were hiding behind the forests by the road, suddenly emerged and began pelting stones and bricks on his official Mahindra Bolero car (WB-74AC-5359).

Once the car halted due to the sudden attack, the youths armed with lathis and machetes drew closer and began showering lathis on the car. The save life, Lal and his driver jumped out of the car and ran to a distance.




After smashing the front, rear screen, and the widow screens of the car, they violent youths then turned towards the police officer wielding machete. It was then that the officer took out his revolver and warned the youths that he would shoot if the neared to him.

This finally made the gang to flee the spot. Subsequently, on getting a SOS message from Lal, a large police team from Siliguri, about 25 km from Dudhia, rushed to the spot and rescued them.

Both the police officer and the driver have suffered injuries in their arms caused by stone throwing and broken glass shards. They have received outdoor treatment at a Siliguri nursing home.

Police have brought the damaged car to the Siliguri police line, and have launched a searched at Dudhia for the GJM cadres you attacked the officer.
