Siliguri, 04 September: DEBRAJ Bhowmick, a non-teaching staff at Gyan Joyti College in Siliguri who was severely beaten up inside the college on 1 September by a group of people on charges of molesting a student, has succumbed to his injuries on Friday morning.

Bhowmick, who had sustained grave injuries in his head, died at the private Anandaloke Hospital at Sevoke Road in Siliguri where he was undergoing treatment since Tuesday afternoon.

He was a resident of Deshabandhu Para in Siliguri and is survived by wife and a little child. His family had lodged a police complaint over the attack on Wednesday but the cops are yet to make an arrest in this connection.

Gyan Joyti College is a private institute that offers under-graduate courses and it is affiliated to North Bengal University.

On 1 September noon, a group of people led by an allegedly molested girl’s maternal uncle forayed into the college and without talking to the authorities straightway went on beating Bhowmick who was in his office seat then.

After the assault group left, Bhowmick was rushed to the Sevoke Road private nursing home with grievous injuries in his head, face and upper body. He was put on ventilator support at once.

A second year girl of Mass Communications and Journalism was allegedly molested by Bhowmick on 31 August when she had gone to deposit her tuition fee. She had subsequently lodged a written complaint with the teacher-in-charge of the college but even before the authorities could act on this, her relatives took law into their hands.
