Kolkata: THE diarrhoea outbreak in south Kolkata has claimed its first victim today.
Biswajit Das (40) of Bagha Jatin off Jadavpur died today while being taken to MR Bangur Hospital at Tollygunge.
Das was admitted to Bagha Jatin State General Hospital on Monday for diarrhoea. With his condition deteriorating, doctors had referred him to MR Bangur.
According to Rinku Naskar, Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillor for ward 102, the number of diarrhoea inflicted people at Bagha Jatin area is jumping by every passing hour.
In the past 24 hours alone, nearly 300 new diarrhoea patients reported to Bagha Jatin State General Hospital. Of them, 45 have been admitted owing to their fragile condition.
The School of Tropical Medicine in the city yesterday confirmed the presence of bacteria in the water samples sent from south Kolkata and has held this responsible for the massive diarrhoea outbreak.
