Kolkata, 11 January: ALTHOUGH India has been trying to improve its position in the index of Ease of Doing Business, it is still too hard to do business in India, Craig L. Hall, the Consul General of US in Kolkata has said.
Hall was speaking at an interactive session on Keys to Growing US-India Commerce & Trade organised today by the Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
He said that the trade value between India and US increased from 19 billion USD in 2000 to 109 billion USD in 2015, and that it has the potential of reaching 500 billion USD. But whether the Indian economic condition was ready for the big leap, the Consul General doubted.
Hall explained that US trade could flourish only if frictions were taken care of and if India continued to liberalise its investment regime by implementing land and labour reforms. He emphasised that policy changes being critical for investment linkages.
