Siliguri, 13 September: THREE persons have died and 22 have been injured in a road accident involving a bus and a lorry on National Highway 31 in North Dinajpur district. Those killed include the driver of the bus and two passengers.
The accident took place at Islampur’s Ramganj area around 5 this morning when a Balurghat (South Dinajpur)-Siliguri private bus lost control and rammed into a lorry that was moving ahead of it. The lorry was loaded with rice sacks.
The crash was so intense that the frontal part of the bus got completely twisted, killing the driver and two passengers on the spot. The lorry driver and his assistant fled from the spot soon after the accident.
Residents of the area, who rushed in hearing the sound of the crash, rescued 22 injured passengers from the bus and took them to the Islampur Sub-divisional Hospital even before police could reach the spot. Seven among the injured were later referred to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri as their condition is critical.
Police have towed away both the bus and the lorry. Cops suspect that the driver of the bus might have fallen drowsy and thus ended up dashing on the lorry. The impact was huge as the lorry was fully loaded.
